The G530 Student Simulator software provides the avionics simulation, and Prepar3D, FSX, or X-Plane provides the aircraft and environmental simulation. You’ll have to manage the avionics while simultaneously managing the challenges of flying the airplane.

Books, videos, courses, and stand-alone part-task trainers allow you to become familiar with the operation of the 530. But they don't allow you to practice using it in the context of actually flying. And that’s a problem.
Why Simulation Matters
In the winter of 2005, a Pilatus PC-12 with a 530 in the panel crashed while on an instrument approach to University Park Airport in State College, PA. While it’s not clear exactly what caused the stall/spin that killed the pilot and all five passengers, there was a clue.
Investigators discovered that, “the pilot had selected the GPS mode for the initial approach, but had not switched to the proper instrument approach mode to allow the autopilot to lock onto the ILS.”
The 530 features an automatic “ILS CDI Capture” feature. But it only works if it’s turned on, and only under certain conditions. Did the PC-12 pilot simply forget to switch the CDI mode from GPS to VLOC? Did his confusion cause the “difficulty maintaining altitude and airspeed while on final approach, with significant excursions above and below the glidepath, as well as large variations in airspeed” that the radar data showed? We’ll never know.
But what we do know is that forgetting to press the CDI button to switch modes (or simply being confused about which mode the CDI is in) is a common “gotcha” when using the 530. You may have experienced it yourself.
We also know that simulation is one of the most inexpensive and most effective ways to maintain proficiency using complex avionics.

The G530 Simulator Navigation Unit hardware features:
